Times photos by Dawn Slade
Milaca Elementary School second graders stepped back in time and enjoyed a working field trip to the historic Oliver H. Kelley Farm in Elk River Thursday, May 1. Joelle Knapp, above, plowed the field with the aid of two oxen. Abby Grimm, below left, was an old pro at getting hay down to the stables below where the students later met “Pete” the Morgan horse. Below right, Emma Johnson (left), Hunter Glem (center) and Sammy Herbert took the opportunity to pet a newborn lamb. The children all did various jobs on the farm, including washing dishes by hand, shoveling manure, hauling wood, planting seeds, shaking out rugs and rolling out cracker dough.
