A need for drugs apparently led to the death of a 32-year-old Milaca man as he tried to injure himself in order to get pain medication.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2:21 p.m., deputies and other emergency response vehicles were called to a reported pedestrian/motor vehicle hit and run on 70th Avenue, Bock.
Initially, Ronald Felt, 29, of Milaca told authorities he had just come across an unknown person along the road on the ground, later telling authorities he knew the victim and that he was a possible victim of a hit and run.
The victim was identified as Lucas William Stenning, 32, of 1st street SE Milaca.
Stenning was still alive when emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene. Despite the responders’ efforts, Stenning died in the ambulance at the scene.
Sheriff Brent Lindgren said investigators are actively working this fatality and have ruled out the reported hit and run.
The sheriff said, “We are not looking for a hit and run vehicle.”
What investigators have learned so far is that Stenning and Felt had been in Felt’s maroon 1999 Ford Windstar van and that Stenning had concocted a plan to get and use prescription drugs by jumping out of the moving vehicle.
Stenning was hoping to become injured so he could go to the hospital, reporting he had been hit by a vehicle, in order to receive prescription medication.
“That plan failed when he died at the scene due to head injuries he sustained,” Lindgren reported.
The investigation is ongoing and active by the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office and upon completion all reports of this case will be forwarded to the Mille Lacs County Attorney’s Office for their review of criminal charges.
