Six candidates for school superintendent
The Milaca Area School Board announces the selection of six candidates to be interviewed for the position of superintendent of schools due to the coming retirement of Dr. Barbra Zakrajsek.

Zakrajsek had announced her intention to retire effective June 30, 2009, last October. Applications were received through Jan. 16, 2009.

The school board reviewed the files of applicants at a work session Tuesday, Jan. 27 and received a recommended list of candidates from BKB Associates, the firm engaged to assist the school board in the search process. 

Milaca community stakeholders assisted the school board in creating a candidate qualification profile. This profile was used by BKB Associates in recommending the following candidates for interviews.

Wayne Olson

•Superintendent at    Comfrey, Minn.

•Experience as teacher, principal, and superintendent for 20 years.

•Experienced in passing levy referenda and long range planning.

•Experience in community collaboratives and diverse populations.

•Holds specialist degree in educational leadership from Minnesota State University – Mankato.


Gerald Hansen

•Superintendent at Ada-Borup Public Schools.

•16 years experience in school administration.

•10 years high school and assistant principal experience in Clear Lake and Muscatine, Iowa.

•Social science teacher for six years Jefferson-Scranton, Iowa.

•Holds doctor’s degree from Iowa State University.


Luther Heller


•Director of Administrative Services    South West-West Central Service Coop, Marshall, Minn.

•25 years superintendent experience in school administration with 18 years as superintendent.

•Broad range of administrative experiences, last superintendent in Springfield, Minn.

•Position at service coop is to assist districts with financial management.

•Experience with levy and bond referenda, diverse populations, and community collaboratives.

•Holds doctor’s degree from University of Nebraska-Lincoln.


Laine Larson

•Superintendent at Bagley, Minn.

•Ten years experience in school administration with three years superintendent experience at Bagley.

•Elementary principal.

•Assistant elementary principal.

•Family Life Science teacher.

•Migrant education teacher.

•Holds specialist degree from Moorhead Sate University.


Paula Henry

•Instructional leader, St. Cloud.

•15 years experience in central administration at St. Cloud.

•Literacy coordinator.

•Q-Comp lead teacher.

•AYP coordinator.

•Administrator of supplemental educational services planning.

•District language arts and elementary teacher.

•Montessori administrator.

•Holds doctorate from St. Mary’s University Minnesota.


Daniel Parent


•Superintendent at Win-E-Mac, Minn.

•Eight years as school administrator.

•Four years as superintendent of Win-E-Mac School District, Erskine, Minn.

•Technology teacher.

•Worked in the corporate area.

•Teacher/coach in southern Minnesota.

•Holds masters from St. Thomas University, St. Paul.

•Licensure from Moorhead State University.


The school board and community members conducted interviews on Tuesday, Feb. 10 and Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the boardroom at the district office.
