The 2008 Wakan Wakpa (Rum River) Canoe Expedition offered a group of inner-city Dakota boys from the Twin Cities the opportunity to paddle the natural artery of their ancestors. The 165-mile trek from Lake Mille Lacs to Minneapolis commemorated many important aspects of the Dakota history. The Rum River (once known as Wakan Wakpa, meaning Holy River) is important to the Dakota who lived at Mille Lacs until 1745 and considered the river the center of their world.
