Update: 7-year-old killed when bike hit by SUV

A 7-year-old rural Milaca girl has died from injuries sustained in a Tuesday, July 9, 2014 crash near her home west of Pease.
Alyssa M. Grimm, daughter of Marty Grimm and Heidi Schaefer, died Wednesday morning at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale where she was airlifted following the collision, which occurred at about 10:15 p.m. on County Road 8, about a quarter mile east of County Road 5.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Alyssa was riding a bicycle in the westbound lane of traffic on County Road 8 when she was struck by a 2008 Saturn Outlook driven by Ryan Schipper, 29, of Milaca. Alyssa sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and later died at the hospital. The driver of the SUV and passenger Robin J. Schipper, 28 of Milaca, suffered no apparent injury, the State Patrol said.
A 911 call was placed to the Mille Lacs County Communications Center by Robin Schipper. The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Department and Milaca Police Department were first on the scene. Officers and deputies immediately began life saving measures, Mille Lacs County Sheriff Brent Lindgren said.
Ryan Schipper told investigators that, while traveling west out of Pease, he saw three children on bicycles also traveling west on County 8. Two were in the westbound lane and a third, Alyssa, was in the eastbound lane but traveling west.
Being about a quarter mile from her home on the corner of County Road 8 and County Road 5, Alyssa, allegedly turned to get on the other side of the road. Schipper told investigators that the girl turned in front of his vehicle “at the last second” and his vehicle and the child collided,” Lindgren said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
