It was a wet course, but a nice day as the Milaca girls golf team took on Blackberry Ridge in Sartell for the Section 6AA Meet on June 2.
The top four teams and the top eight individuals from the 18 holes on June 2 moved on to Tuesday to compete for a state berth.
However, none of the Milaca squad would get past day one.
Despite improvements throughout the season from the Wolves, nobody quite got on track. After all was said and done the Wolves finished with a 440, 78 strokes behind fourth-placed Becker. Staples-Motley took the top spot on the day with a 348, and Osakis was two strokes behind them in second, while Rocori finished third with a 361.
Eight individuals cruised to day two including Granite Ridge Conference members Ann Berdan, Anna Faerber and Lauren Herker of Cathedral, and Megan Wege and Lauren Anderson of Albany.
As for Milaca, freshman Haley Hoskins finished the best with a 108, 15 strokes off the pace to advance on to day two. Seniors Olivia Wolbert and Leah Crain shot 110 and 111 respectively. Claire Mettling carded a 111 as well. Meanwhile Alicia Wolbert shot a 116 and Molly Banks finished with a 118.
“It was a disappointing way to end the season,” said Milaca girls golf coach Heather Hoeck. “We had improved a lot over the season, but we are very young and look foward to what this group can do next year.”
Milaca will return three freshman (Hoskins, Mettling and Alicia Wolbert) and a sophomore (Banks) from the section team. They also have seventh grader Elaina Davis, sophomore Megan Gould and eighth grader Ellie Banks who all have some varsity experience returning next spring.
Osakis went on to win the two-day event with a 679, advancing themselves to the state meet. Rocori’s Marja Sorenson took home medalist honors after shooting a blistering 149 in the two-day tournament.
The state golf tournament was June 10-11 at the Sands in Jordan.
