There is a new team in town.
Milaca recently added a VFW baseball team, thanks to the sponsorship by the Milaca VFW Siemers-Hakes Post 10794. The VFW team was created to get kids more playing time in the summer.
“A lot of our ninth and 10th graders didn’t get to play, or had to go play legion and sit the bench, and I had a good group of ninth graders coming up, so I was able to get us a donation from the VFW in Milaca and get a team started,” said coach Craig Talberg.
Talberg is Milaca High School’s varsity baseball coach.
His assistant will be Nick Hoffman, and the team currently has 16 kids out for this season. It had been a long time since Milaca had a VFW baseball team.
“Nobody even has a handle on how long it has been,” said the Milaca VFW’s Tom Kvamme. “But, it has been a long period of time.”
Both Talberg and Kvamme said they hope that the team can bring some playing time and fundamentals to players earlier, so they can go on and succeed at higher levels.
Kvamme said that the post is glad to be sponsoring the team once again.
“It is good to see it back,” Kvamme said. “It’s a good youth activity, and is something the VFW is happy to be a part of.”
Their first game was last Monday in Albany. They have another game on Thursday at home against Braham.
They start their conference schedule on June 9.
