Entering the final Granite Ridge Conference (GRC) golf meet of the season in Little Falls on May 20, the Milaca Wolves trailed three teams by less than 20 strokes. They hoped to make up that difference and vault their way up to third place in the GRC standings.
They only fell further back though as Zimmerman and Little Falls topped them handily, and Albany remained ahead of them.
The Wolves finished with a 362, in sixth place, one stroke ahead of Albany.
However, Zimmerman finished 24 strokes better and the Flyers took second place, 27 strokes better than the Wolves.
Cathedral won the meet and the GRC season title comfortably. In Little Falls, the Crusaders shot 322, which was 13 strokes better than the second-place Flyers were able to do on their home course. For the season, the Crusaders finished 55 strokes ahead of second place Becker.
At that meet Cathedral’s Sam LaBine took home medalist honors with a 74.
Milaca’s top finishers were Cole Barsody and Sam Johnson, who each shot 89. Leif Larson shot a 91, while Michael Nelson finished with 95 and Bennett Lerud carded a 93. The final competitor for the Wolves was TJ Birnbaum, who finished with 108.
Following the tournament the All-Conference team was announced. The All-Conference team was determined by using the best eight out of 11 conference nine-hole scores. Albany’s David Schneider was the top finisher with 304.
Tied for second were David Molinari of Zimmerman and Jackson Fluck of Becker with 311. Rounding out the top six were Little Falls’ Kyler Erdman, LaBine and Kyle Haag from Cathedral.
Milaca’s highest finisher was Nelson, who golfed in nine of the 11 meets, and his top-eight totaled 352. Other Wolves qualifiers included Larson (361), Bennett Lerud (362) and Blake Kiel (373).
Milaca finished sixth overall in the GRC as a team with 1,955 strokes. They were as high as third place in the standings, but dropped down in the final few meets of the year.
The Section 6AA meet began last Monday, but was incomplete when this issue went to press. Look next week for complete results.
