Milaca boys golf win home invite

Milaca senior Jared Gould hits a chip last Thursday at the Milaca Invite.

Two tournaments in the past week produced varied results for the Milaca boys golf team.

On May 20 the Wolves took sixth place at Mora and plummeted from third in the Granite Ridge Conference standings to sixth place.

However, last Thursday the Wolves topped three other teams for first place at the Milaca Invite.

Albany, Little Falls and Zimmerman were able to leapfrog the Wolves after they shot a 361 on May 20 at a GRC meet in Mora.

Albany bested them by 35 strokes, Zimmerman by 22 and Little Falls by 20 on the day.

The Wolves were led by Blake Kiel’s 88, while Leif Larson shot 89, Michael Nelson carded a 91 and Jared Gould shot 93. Luke Dillan added a 95 and Bennett Lerud sot a 96 to round out the Wolves’ scores.

Becker won the tournament with a strong 308 score and all but clinched their spot as the top team in the GRC.

David Schneider from Albany was medalist with a 74.

The Wolves bounced back last Thursday thouh as they shot a much better 344 at their home invitational at Stones Throw Golf Course north of Milaca.

Michael Nelson took third with an 80, and Luke Dillan shot an 86 to both place in the top 10. Nelson took third and Dillan took sixth place on the day. The Medalist was Aitkin’s Will Peterson, who also shot an 80, but won on a tiebreaker.

Milaca took the team title thanks to a tiebreaker as well. After both the Wolves and Aitkin tied with 344’s the fifth score was used to determine the winner. That meant senior Jared Gould’s 92 would best Aitkin’s Nick Smith’s 103 to win.

Sam Johnson also played for Milaca and carded a 98.

The Wolves hope to see their latter selves play at the Section tournament on June 2-3 at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell.
