Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids for Duane M. Grandy, age 76, who passed away Tuesday at Foley Nursing Home. Rev. Ronald Weyrens will officiate and entombment will be at Hilltop Mausoleum in Sauk Rapids. Visitation will be 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. The Sauk Rapids VFW post # 6992 will pray at 5:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 6:00 p.m.
Duane was born July 8, 1937 to Glen and Ernestine (Weaver) Grandy in Milaca. On October 7, 1961 he married Marlys Walker at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. Duane served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a resident of Sauk Rapids most of his life. Duane was a business owner of Grandys Granite City Towing for 15 years. After retiring from the towing and repair business, Duane was a bus driver for Larson Bus Service, a mechanic for several local car dealerships and worked at the Sauk Rapids compost site. Duane also became very active in county and city politics. He served as Benton County Commissioner for 12 years where he served as chair for the North Star Corridor. He was also a Homeland Security and Emergency Management Operation Plan Reviewer. He was a member of Sauk Rapids Riverside Lions Club, Benton County Mounted Patrol, Benton County Agricultural Society, Le Sauk township board, Benton County planning Commissioner, Director of the great St. Cloud area retired and senior volunteer programs, Benton County Fair Board, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as an usher. Duane was the Sauk Rapids Citizen of the Year in 2005.
Duane is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marlys; children, Mary Jo (Jim) Swanson of Sioux Falls, Dale (Kristine) Grandy of Milaca, Debbie (Greg) Bemboom of Sauk Rapids; siblings, Beverly (Wes) Berghivs of Milaca, Glen Jr. (Lois) of Killen, TX, Richard (Pat) Of Killen, TX, David (Linda) of Waconia; and 7 grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Nolan, Sierra, Dakota, Anthony and Bailey. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Connie Grandy and Joy Glaum.
