Milaca Special Olympics strong at state meet

The Milaca Community Special Olympics competed at the state tournament on March 28-30 at the University of St. Thomas.

The athletes from Milaca not only had a good time, but also came home with some great success as well.

Five basketball players were among the top finishers for Milaca. Both Jordan Habiger and Bill Totzke won gold medals in individual skills. Jonathan DeBoer took a silver medal in that same event, and Amy Kuschel took home a bronze. Corey Santema finished in seventh place.

The Milaca swimmers also had many great finishes over the course of the tournament.

In the 25 meter freestyle competition Santema took first place, while Michelle Perish finished first for the girls. In the 50 meter freestyle Santema took second place, and Dale Paulson took third place, while Sarah Timmer took first and Kaitlyn Zillmer finished second for the girls.

Zillmer again did well in the 25 meter breast stroke, taking first place. Paulson captured the top spot for the boys.

In the 25 meter backstroke it was Timmer who toke home a second place finish, while DeBoer took first place for the boys.

The 100 meter breast stroke title went to Zilmer. DeBoer captured another first place finish in the 15 meter unassisted swim to round out the top individual finishes.

In the unified team competition Jonathan DeBoer, Kerry DeBoer, Sam Bolt and Zillmer took home first place in the 4×25 meter freestyle relay.

The team of Timmer, Ellie Hartung, Perish and Meg French took second place in the event.
