Letter: Dining site benefits from United Way

Catholic Charities Senior Dining wishes to acknowledge the grant of $1,276 made to our senior dining site in Milaca by the Central Mille Lacs United Way.
This grant will support congregate dining and Meals on Wheels in Milaca, which in 2013 served over 300 local seniors. In an effort to help senior citizens live healthy, independent lives, Catholic Charities Senior Dining provide a low-cost nutritious midday meal to working, retired and semi-retired persons age 60 and over.
We know seniors need this program. On a yearly survey we found that across our nine-county service area 71% of our congregate diners live at less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level, and 90 percent of our Meals on Wheels diners live at less than 200% of the federal poverty level.
Over half of congregate and home delivered meals diners say they use the meal for one half or more of their daily food intake, meaning often our program is their main source of food. The meal is designed to provide a third of their daily requirements. These meal programs are a critical part of supporting the nutrition needs of older adults, and often serve as a resource that allows seniors to remain in their homes.
We thank the Central Mille Lacs United Way for their support of Catholic Charities Senior Dining in Milaca, and supporting the lives and health of local seniors.
