Mora-Milaca-Hinckley-Finlayson will face Spring Lake Park in the quarterfinals of the Section 5A Boys Hockey Tournament Thursday, Feb. 20, in Blaine, at 7 p.m.
The Mustangs, who finished the regular season with a 15-9-1 record, were seeded No. 6 in the 10-team section while Spring Lake Park, 18-7, was seeded No. 3.
“It will be a tough game but we are looking forward to the challenge,” said Mustangs Coach Jon Samuelson.
Spring Lake Park topped M-M-H-F 11-3 Dec. 14 but Samuelson feels his team is much stronger now.
The section tournament began Tuesday night with a pair of “play-in” games. Legacy Christian Academy, seeded No. 7, topped No. 10-seeded Moose Lake 5-2 and No. 9-seeded North Branch defeated No. 8-seeded Pine City-Rush City 3-2.
In other quarterfinal games Thursday night, No. 2-seeded Princeton will host Legacy Christian, No. 1-seeded Chisago Lakes hosts North Branch and No. 5-seeded Providence Academy travels to No. 4-seeded Proctor.
The semifinals are Saturday, Feb. 22, at the sites of the highest-seeded teams remaining in the tournament.
Mora-Milaca-Hinckley-Finlayson will face the Princeton-Legacy Christian winner.
The Mustangs finished regular-season play last week by topping Northern Lakes 3-2 Monday. Feb. 10 before losing to Cambridge-Isanti 3-2 Tuesday, Feb. 11. Both games were at Mora.
Ninth-grader Luke Anderson and senior Hunter Wedin scored goals to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after the first period. Senior Greg Chmiel scored in the third period.
Sophomore goalie Teddy Blenkush stopped 25 of 27 shots.
The Mustangs had a 50-27 edge in shots on goal.
Chmiel and junior Hunter Baxley scored the Mustang goals against Cambridge-Isanti. Junior Tanner Baxley was in goal and stopped 43 of 46 shots.
