In an effort to raise funds for its building renovation and expansion project, the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Bock is presenting, “Murder at the Pie Auction,” by Michael Druce.

This  murder mystery will have the whole family buckled over in laughter. Even the cast of Emmanuel Players couldn’t help cracking up during its rehearsals earlier this week.

Bev Robinson, church pastor, is directing the performance, and even though she knows the play word for word, she still laughs at the characters’ antics.

“I’ve seen it for how many weeks directing and I still laugh,” she said. “It’s hysterical.”

The script comes from the faith-based group called the Contemporary Drama Service.

“We use a lot of their work,” Robinson said. “I’ve used them for years. This one struck me as funny the first time I read it. It’s a lot of puns and just silliness.”

Set in the backwaters of Mynute, Alaska, “Murder at the Pie Auction,” plays on the unknown status of the town by confusing it with the even more out-of-the-way location of Minot, North Dakota. A group of small town pastry makers and their friends and family interact hilariously as they try to track down their missing pie judge.

The cast, comprised of a combination of local and regional members of the Emmanuel Players, have enjoyed portraying their wacky, neurotic roles.

“We have quite the devout bunch of adults who put these on,” Robinson said.

The church did conduct a pie sale recently and raised $450 for the building project. Robinson said a play about a pie auction seemed the appropriate next method to attract donations.

“We need to get this building handicapped accessible so people can come and go and enjoy things,” she said. “I can name about 20 of our members who are affected by this.”

“Murder at the Pie Auction” will be presented at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at the church. A light lunch will be served and an offering to benefit the building project will be taken.
