The Princeton Depot is taking a page from its past to help ensure its future.
It was 1856 when the Princeton community pledged $50,000 to help establish the depot and bring the Great Northern Railroad to the city.
Now the Mille Lacs County Historical Society is turning to the community as it seeks pledges from a few good supporters with a goal of replacing the depot roof.
A grant is being sought from the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Fund to replace the depot’s deteriorating roof, according to Director Penny Quast. The cost of replacing the much-needed roof has now reached about $250,000, according to Carie Furhman, Princeton’s community development director.
That’s where the local pledges come in.
Historical society officials have been told that a local match is very important when it comes to being awarded a grant. It’s not so much the amount of money that is pledged, but the fact the community shows support for the project by pledging its own support, Quast said.
“A local match greatly improves the chances of obtaining the grant as it shows local buy-in and commitment, as well as demonstrates the community’s investment in their historic buildings,” according to the historical society.
You can show your support for the depot by making a contribution to the fundraising effort by sending a donation to the Mille Lacs County Historical Society at 101 10th Ave. S. or by emailing Quast at firstname.lastname@example.org prior to Sept. 20 to request a pledge form.
