Curtis, Merten win matches at State Friday

Senior Joey Curtis at 132 pounds and junior Brandon Merten at 285 advanced to Saturday’s competition at the Class AA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Curtis won a 10-3 decision over Austin Hjelle of Thief River Falls in the first round, then lost to Jake Weirke of Scott West 10-8 in triple overtime. Curtis stayed alive to place by topping Riley Roth of Marshall 9-4 in the wrestlebacks. He was scheduled to face Brady Berge of Kasson-Mantorville today (Saturday).

Merten was pinned by unbeaten Sam Stoll of Kasson-Mantorville in the first round but came back to stop Zach Mahan of Orono 5-3 in the wrestlebacks. Merten was scheduled to meet Davion Franklin of Watertown-Mayer today.

Junior Ray Hoffman at 113 lost to David Flynn of Scott West 2-0 in his open match, then lost an 8-1 decision to Jakob Stageburg of New London-Spicer.

Sophomore Austin Weidner at 170 took an early lead in his opening match but was later pinned by Bobby Lee of Becker. Miles Hammerlund of Delano then won a 6-1 decision over Weidner in the wrestlebacks.
