Faith Christian School’s girls basketball team chalked up two victories last week on its home court as it boosted its season record to 14-7.
The Saints stopped Hope Christian of Inver Grove Heights 64-21 Tuesday, Feb. 19, then defeated Fon du Lac of Cloquet 74-42 Friday.
“It was a good week for us,” said Faith Christian Coach Mike Sohre. “We’re getting healthy again and some of our junior varsity players were able to get some experience in Friday’s game.”
The Saints had little trouble with Hope Christian as they moved to a 39-6 halftime lead.
Senior forward-center Jamie Nelson and sophomore center Ashley Johnson each scored 23 points, with Nelson pulling down 14 rebounds and Johnson 18.
Senior guard Madde Brown had a season-best 12 points.
“We just had five players available for the game and Hope came out in a full-court press, apparently thinking it could wear us down,” said Sohre. “But, our girls are well conditioned and we ate the press up.”
Sohre also cited his team’s defense which held Hope’s Suzi Zimmer to nine points, well under her average of 16.7.
Faith Christian also jumped out to a quick start against Fon du Lac as it took a 34-19 halftime lead.
Nelson poured in 33 points and had 13 rebounds while Johnson scored 28 points and had 20 rebounds.
“Fon du Lac had a good perimeter defense but couldn’t handle Jamie and Ashley inside,” said Sohre.
Nelson’s 33 points set a school record, breaking the mark of 31 that Johnson had set earlier this season.
The Saints travel to Valley Christian of St. Croix Falls, Wis., Friday for a 6:30 game.
That game concludes the regular season. Faith Christian will then compete at the Christian Athletic League Tournament March 7-9 in Mankato.
