Wales school.  She wanted to join the Army but, as WW II was going on, her parents said no daughter of theirs was going into the Army, so she went with her second love, teaching. She attended summer school at Northern Iowa University and started teaching that fall on an emergency teacher’s certificate.

She met Bart Savage and three days later they married in Kansas City, Kansas on Oct 14, 1946.  Shortly thereafter Bart was shipped out to the Panama Canal zone. When he returned, they moved to Biloxi, Mississippi. There their first son, Jack Savage, was born at the air base hospital on Oct 27, 1947. They then transferred to Great Falls, Montana. Her second son, James Savage, was born on Feb 11, 1949 at Offutt Air base in Omaha, NE. Their third son, Jerry Savage, was born in Napa, Calif. on Sept. 2, 1950.

Elaine loved the military life. She honored and respected the men who served. Bart and his five’ brothers (Bob, Bill, Bert, Burney, and Burley) all served during WW II. Bob and Bert were in Europe while the other four were in the Pacific. And Elaine was so proud of those boys and they all returned home. Elaine and Bart separated in 1954 and she moved back to Minnesota and worked two jobs to support the kids but never complained. She was a Cub Scout den mother in St. Paul for three years.  Elaine and Bart were married again in 1966. In 1968 with her sons Jack and Jim in the Army and Jerry graduating high school and then joining the Marine Corps, she was able to go back to her second love, teaching.

She went to Montana where they still had emergency teaching credential. The first school was Sand Creek which was between Circle and Wolf Point, Montana. The teacherage (living quarters) was in the basement. She taught at a number of schools for the next 22 years, because of the tenure rules. Bart died in Feb. 1975 while she was at Pine Grove School. In 1972-1973 she took a year off from teaching to finish her degree at St. Cloud State. She retired from teaching at Prairie Elk School in 1992. The school was 45 miles north of Jordon, Mt. Then she moved back to live with Jerry in Ogilvie. Here she joined the Foster Grandparents program in Mora and also tutored at home. In 2006 she received the MetLife foundation award, a very high honor. She stopped teaching in 2011.

While she was in Montana she joined the VFW auxiliary as she so proud of our veterans. She rose to local president but did not want to go up the chairs as she was back in Minnesota during the summer and going to St Cloud State to further education. When she retired she joined the Milaca, MN VFW auxiliary Post #10794 as a Life member. In 2003- 2004 and again in 2004-2005 she was District 6 President.

She has lived with Jerry since retiring in the Mora-Ogilvie area.  She loved doing cross-stitch and plastic canvas. She would make Christmas, birthday, anniversary and sympathy cards for almost all the relatives and friends. Along with waste basket and Kleenex boxes for gifts.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents Fred (1964) and Hannah (1988) Black. Her husband Bart (1975), her son Jack (1995) and her son James (1985).
