Milaca eighth-graders Bailey Pedersen and Alex Vonch were awarded $75 and $50 gift certificates respectively by local VFW Commander Danny Sandberg for earning first and second place in the Patriot’s Pen competition in which their essays competed.

The Milaca VFW Post participated in the national Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot’s Pen essay contest for teens for the first time this past November.

Milaca High School eighth-graders Bailey Pedersen and Alex Vonch were the first local winners of the contest with their essays in the 2012-2013 theme, “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

Local VFW Commander Danny Sandberg said member Tom Kvamme was instrumental in organizing the program for the local post, and hopes to continue offering the annual contest to area students in the future.

Both Pedersen and Vonch said they were excited and happy to receive the awards and both enjoy writing. Below are the two boys’ winning essays.
