Two people were arrested and released following a 911 call Thursday, Jan. 31 reporting someone had been shot in the parking lot of Mille Lacs Grand Casino.
Quentin Reginald Garbow, 23, and Marissa Clare Sam, 21, both of Onamia, were being held in the Mille Lacs County Jail pending charges, but released Sunday due to insufficient evidence to hold them.
When Mille Lacs Tribal Police responded to the scene, they recovered shell casings in the hotel parking lot. The victim, a 19-year-old Isle man, was shot in the back and was in a room on the fifth floor of the hotel. He was transported to the Mille Lacs Health System by ambulance where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries sustained from an apparent bullet grazing his back.
Video surveillance assisted law enforcement in identifying the vehicle the suspects used in the shooting. The pick up truck indicated in the footage was identified at a nearby Super America gas station. When a Crow Wing County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants fled onto Mille Lacs Lake.
A perimeter of the lake was established by Isle, Onamia, Mille Lacs Tribal and Baxter police departments, along with Crow Wing, Mille Lacs, and Aitkin county sheriffs offices, as well as DNR and Mille Lacs Tribal DNR officers.
Mille Lacs Tribal DNR agents entered the lake on snowmobiles and located the suspects’ vehicle, which was abandoned southwest of Rainbow Island in Vineyard Bay near the shoreline. A Mille Lacs County K-9 unit was dispatched and tracked two suspects to Migizi Drive where evidence of a second vehicle was found.
Through the investigation, Sam was identified as a person of interest. North Central Drug Task Force agents initiated a traffic stop of a 4×4 Bronco, the tire impressions of which appeared to match the Migizi Drive tracks. Sam’s shoe prints also appeared to match the footprints left on the lake.
Further investigation revealed Garbow to be a second person of interest and he was arrested at 43785 Oodena Drive. A loaded pistol with ballistic rip rounds was located at the residence. A search of Garbow’s residence at 16740 Ataage Drive recovered 9mm, 22 and 38 ammunition rounds as well as a holster.
