Chatfield, behind five pins, topped Milaca 47-21 in the semifinals of the Farmington Invitational Saturday, Jan. 5.
The victory moved Chatfield to the finals where it defeated Lakeville North 48-22. Milaca bounced back and trimmed Park of Cottage Grove 39-28 to claim third place.
Milaca entered the tournament ranked No. 8 in Class AA while Chatfield was ranked No. 11 in Class A.
“Chatfield has a very solid team, with six ranked individuals,” said Milaca Co-Head Coach Mitch Vedders. “And, its other wrestlers are pretty good – it has good team balance.
“Chatfield pretty much walked through the tournament. We’re still building and we are not at our best, yet.”
Junior Ray Hoffman at 113 pounds, sophomore Josh Otten at 160 and junior Brandon Merten at heavyweight scored pins for the Wolves.
In the victory over Park of Cottage Grove, sophomore Jake Merten at 195 and Brandon Merten at heavyweight had pins while senior Mike Hoffman at 126 and ninth-grader Dru Kuchenbaker at 138 scored technical falls. Sophomore Hunter Noor at 120 and junior Jorgen Erickson at 170 notched major decisions.
Noor, Otten and Brandon Merten were 3-0 in the meet.
Senior Joey Curtis suffered his first losses of the season but both were to state-ranked opponents. Curtis, ranked No. 6 in Class AA at 132, lost to junior Canedy of Northfield 5-3 in the first round and 6-4 to junior A.J. Riley of Chatfield. Canedy is ranked No. 4 at 138 in Class AAA while Riley is No. 7 at 132 in Class A.
Milaca, 12-4, hosts Zimmerman in a Granite Ridge Conference match tonight (Thursday, Jan. 10) at 7:30, then travels to the Mounds View Mustangs Duals Saturday at 9 a.m. Owatonna, No. 5 in Class AAA, heads the tournament field.
