FCS goes 1-2 at CAL tournament
The Faith Christian School volleyball team went 1-2 at the Christian Athletic League State Tournament last weekend and fell one victory short of its tournament goal.
However, coach Mike Sohre felt the Saints played pretty well while facing some tough competition at the meet, which was held at St. Croix Falls, Wis.
“Our goal was to maybe pull off an upset against St. Cloud Christian in our first match and if we didn’t do that, then come back and win the consolation title,” said Sohre.
First and second round matches were two-out-of-three games and St. Cloud topped Faith Christian 25-18, 25-22 on Friday.
“Our normally strong serving was absent as we served a season low 68 percent, which really tarnished an otherwise good match by us,” said Sohre. “I felt we outplayed St. Cloud, but you can’t spot a decent team 13 points off of service errors and expect to win.”
Lauren Freichels was 10-13 serving and had five aces , two kills and 10 digs for the Saints while Ashley Nordvik was 5-6 serving with two aces and six digs and Carlyn Ross was 5-6 serving with two aces. Madde Brown notched 15 digs.
That moved the Saints to the consolation round where they scored a 25-21, 25-16 victory over the Hope Christian Eagles of South St. Paul Saturday.
“Our service game came back and we served at 90 percent against Hope Christian,” said Sohre. ““Hope was a spunky team in the first game but we pulled out a close win, then cruised in the second game.”
Ashley Johnson was 13-15 serving with six aces and she had seven digs and eight sets while Freichels was 8-8 serving with two aces and six kills and also had six digs.
Nordvik was 9-9 serving with an ace and two kills while Brown was 7-8 serving with two aces and two kills and also had 11 digs. Ross was 4-4 serving and also notched four kills, six digs and three sets.
Immanuel Lutheran of Mankato topped Faith Christian 3-1 in the match for consolation honors Saturday. FCS won the first game 25-22 before Immanuel rallied back by winning the next three, 26-15, 25-13 and 25-23.
“We had defeated Immanuel 3-2 earlier in the season so this shaped up to be a very good match,” said Sohre. “We came out strong and won the first game but after that Immanuel played exceptionally well, coming out on top of many long volleys, and we ended up with having some pretty long sets.
“Immanuel showed they were the better team that day. We weren’t too upset, knowing that we did play pretty well and weren’t beaten by ourselves. We lost to a good team that played well.”
Ross was 16-16 serving with three aces and she had 12 digs and five sets while Freichels was 13-16 serving with two aces, five kills and 16 digs. Johnson was 14-15 serving with five aces, six kills,14 digs and five sets while Brown was 6-9 serving and had three aces and 13 digs.
Korrina Rauschendorfer was 8-13 serving and had three aces and seven digs while Nordvik was 7-8 serving and had one ace and five digs.
Freichels and Brown, both seniors, were named to the all-tournament team. Brown also earned All-League First Team honors and Freichels earned All-League Honorable Mention honors.
“There were eight teams in the tournament and 12 players were selected to the all-tournament team,” said Sohre. “So, it was quite an honor to have two players selected.”
“Madde and Lauren played well in the tournament and both also had very good seasons.”
Faith Christian School will have its fall banquet Thursday, Nov. 8.
