Man sends police on air, ground search

Residents on the south side of Milaca may have wondered what was going on Saturday, Oct. 20 when police helicopters and squad cars were combing the area.

Mille Lacs County Sheriff Brent Lindgren said deputies and officers were searching for a man wanted in connection to a domestic assault call they received that day. The man had left a residence near the county roads 2 and 4 with a firearm.

Nicholas Timothy Bassett, 24, was arrested at his place of employment in Milaca Thursday, Oct. 25. He has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic assault, illegal possession of a firearm, and fleeing police.

I believe this actually occurred on Sunday, October 21st. I was out for a bike ride in the area when the helicopter was out. Kind of upset because a cop car turned on the road going slowly with just the lights on, stopped a little further up the road from where I was biking and never once informed me there was a man out there WITH a firearm as I biked right past him. It would have been nice to have been notified since we do live in the area and have small children that normally would have been playing outside. Not sure why it took so long for this story to be put online as well.

    i agree with Sara but….
i don’t think that our county sheriff dept and our Police dept report anything that happens in our area of the county to the newspaper. i emailed Lesley Toth earlier in the week about not seeing any report on what happen in our area in the paper or on the website, Its not Lesley fault that our serv and protect dept did do their job and notified all of us in the area about a man in the area near the county roads 2 and 4 with a firearm.it and to keep an eye out for the man, would have taken all of 20 mins to let us 7-9 homes in the blocked off area, where is a cop when you need one its a joke….

I think we will never know the truth of what was really going on because I too stopped to ask a officer what was going on and he told me to get moving and get out of there. I believe there is much more to the story when a chopper is involved, I think it may be a whole lot of overkill being the man is only being charged with misdemeanor charges. I believe people should know when danger is in the area so preparations can be made to protect self, family, and property. Another incident mishandled by law enforcement.

people are being a bit unfair and assuming a lot here i think. be thankful for those officers who were risking their lives and do so every day. they have families at home as well. it is too easy to play arm chair quarterback and be critical. such a thankless job, well for what it worth I appreciate the law enforcement officers that serve us.

I also agree with the above statements on why in the world were the police not warning the public?? This guy could have been hiding anywhere and to bring the chopper out, dogs, ATV’s and ambulance for some guy with misdemeanors seems a bit much if their was not a threat? They were searching my friends property line with ATV’s and dogs and the ambulance was parked in her driveway. Not one mention to her by the officials of what was going on and if she has cause to worry. Good job Mille Lacs County for making people feel safe outside without having to worry if some guy with a gun is going to be hiding in your barn when you go out there at night!
