Donald Wayne Monroe and Mary Jane Monroe
Funeral services for Donald Wayne Monroe, 78, of Centennial, Colo. were Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Our Father Lutheran Church in Centennial. Burial was at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo. with full military honors.
Donald died June 29.
He was born March 30, 1934 in Milaca to Selma and Arthur Monroe. He was one of four boys and a girl. He graduated from Milaca High School and then joined the United States Navy. He was active duty from July 1952 to June 1956. He joined the Naval Reserves and remained active in the reserves until 1994, retiring with the rank of Captain.
Don married Mary Jane Kimbley of Washington, D.C. on Nov. 8, 1957. They both worked for the Navy Department Military Sea Transportation Service before moving to Milaca where Don had a meat processing plant on the farm previously owned by his parents. After living in Minnesota for awhile, they moved to Littleton, Colo. Don bought a Meat Processing Plant and ran Monroe’s Economy Market and Lockers in Arvada, Colo. until June 1990 when he retired. They then bought a place in Mesa, Ariz. and spent part of every winter in Arizona for about 12 years.
Don volunteered for the American Legion and loved working the Pickle Bar during the bingo games. He also was an avid fan of the University of Colorado Buffaloes, Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos.
He was survived in death by his wife Mary, who passed away on July 2, 2012, two and a half days after Don’s passing. He is survived by his daughter Wendy of Lafayette, Colo.; brothers, Ervin (Peggy) Monroe of Milaca, Norman (Karoline) Monroe of Chaska and Robert (Betty) Monroe of Aitkin; sister JoAnn Schmidt of Spooner, Wis.; and many nephews and nieces.
Donald was preceded in death by his son Wayne on July 17, 2010; and his parents.
Funeral services for Mary Jane (Kimbley) Monroe, 79, of Centennial, Colo. were together with her husband Donald’s, on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Our Father Lutheran Church in Centennial. Burial was at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo.
Mary died July 2.
She was born Jan. 27, 1933 in Leesburg, Va. area to Sadie Lee and Arthur Kimbley. She was one of eight children. She graduated from High School in Virginia and then moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Navy Department and eventually met Don. She volunteered as a candy striper at the USO.
Mary married Donald Wayne Monroe on Nov. 8, 1957 in Washington, D.C. Mary continued to work for the Navy Department in the Military Sea Transportation Service until they moved to Milaca. After living in Minnesota for several years they decided to move to Littleton, Colo. where she eventually had a job working for the Federal Government until her retirement. After retiring she volunteered her time to Meals on Wheels and enjoyed the Red Hat Society as well as card games, golf, being hostess to their many friends and traveling with Don and/or daughter Wendy. They bought a place in Mesa, Ariz. and enjoyed the winter climate there for about 12 years.
She is survived by her daughter Wendy; and sisters Patsy, Martha, Alice and Virginia; and nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Donald on July 5, 2012; son Wayne on July 17, 2010; her parents; and three of her sisters.
