Body of man washes up on shores of Mille Lacs Lake

Mille Lacs County Sheriff Brent Lindgren released information about a suspected drowning on the southwest side of Mille Lacs Lake.

The sheriff’s office reports that dispatch received a 911 call around 12 p.m.  Thursday July 5 that the body of a deceased male had washed up onto shore in the area of 15665 Twilight Road, Onamia.

The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Patrol deputies, Boat and Water deputies, Mille Lacs Health System Ambulance, Mille Lacs Tribal Police and the Mille Lacs Tribal DNR all responded to the area. A quick canvas of the immediate area determined that a man who was in the process of building a new home in the area was missing. The man matched the description of the unidentified male in the water near the shore.  Law enforcement quickly identified the man at the scene as 52-year-old Terry Lee Mckinzie of Plymouth.

“Investigation  reveals that the man was seen by neighbors the evening of July Fourth and evidence observed leads us to believe that the man may have attempted entering the rocky shore of Mille Lacs near his home to possibly bathe in the lake for the evening and possibly lost footing hitting his head and drowned,” according to Lindgren’s release.

The Anoka County medical examiners office is assisting the sheriff’s office with an autopsy, which is standard operating procedures in cases such as this to determine officially what happened to the man. The case is active and ongoing and under investigation pending the outcome of that autopsy.

Lindgren said that the investigation so far does not indicate any foul play.
