Part-time position saves county cash
A request from county personnel director Lisa Herges at the Mille Lacs County Board’s June 19 meeting for a part-time position was approved, with a dissenting vote.
Herges asked that a full-time 911 communications specialist, who had resigned, be hired as a part-time person to reduce overtime in the communications area.
She said the position would be limited to 14 or fewer hours a week and fewer than 67 days a year.
Because it would be an intermittent position, the person would not qualify for insurance or accrued time benefits, and thus the result would be a savings for the county.
“Is is overtime or bad staffing? asked Commissioner Dan Whitcomb.
Commissioner Jack Edmonds asked if the move would result in adding a part-time position.
Herges answered that approving the request would result in an annual savings of about $15,000 for the county.
The motion passed to approve the request, Whitcomb voting against.

Edmonds asked if adding a part time position would add a part time position???? Jack, I guess you were right when you told me I couldn’t really expect much from you. Have you looked at the county attorney’s budget yet?
