Legion team will face rugged schedule

Rainouts have given the Milaca American Legion baseball team’s schedule a new look.

The team, particularly its pitching staff, will face a grueling schedule the week before the playoffs are scheduled to begin.

Milaca’s doubleheader at home against St. Francis Thursday, June 14, was postponed. So was Monday’s home game against North Branch.

Those postponements set up a final week that looks like this:

•Monday, July 9 – doubleheader at North Branch.

•Tuesday, July 10 – at Chisago Lakes.

•Thursday, July 12 – home vs. Cambridge.

•Friday, July 13 – doubleheader at home vs. St. Francis.

Six games over five days.

The playoffs are scheduled to begin Monday, July 16.

“That’s going to be a tough week,” said Milaca Coach Bart Naumann. “But, those were dates that were open for make-up games.

“We know that week is coming so we’ve got a little time to get ready for it.”

Milaca fell to 0-2 following a loss to Princeton Tuesday, June 12, at Milaca.

Milaca led 4-3 after six innings but Princeton rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Milaca scored a run in its half of the inning.

“Our errors came at the wrong time – Princeton was able to score a couple runs off them and that was it,” said Naumann. “Our hitting and pitching have been good but we’re struggling in the field at critical times.”

Brandon Kiel pitched the first six and two-third innings, allowing five hits, three walks and one hit batter while striking out seven. Brian Kiel came in to get the final out.

Brandon Kiel led a nine-hit offense as he went 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles. Brian Kiel rapped a double and a single and Travis Bertram and Mike Garber each had two singles.

Milaca is at Cambridge tonight (Thursday) at 6:30, then travels to Mora Monday, June 25, also at 6:30. The team is at Hinckley Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30.
