Legion team drops opener

Milaca’s American Legion baseball team dropped its season opener Thursday, June 7, at Mora scored a 3-2 victory at Milaca.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Mora broke the deadlock with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

“We made a mistake and it cost us,” said coach Bart Naumann. “I wasn’t happy with our fielding in the infield but our outfield play was solid.

“Our pitching was pretty good and we hit the ball very well. What hurt was that we stranded five runners in scoring position.”

Justin Fransen pitched the  first five innings and allowed two hits and three walks while striking out 4. Matt VanSomeren pitched the final two frames, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one. He also hit one batter.

Milaca had an 8-3 edge in hits.

Brandon Kiel had a double and a single while Travis Bertram had three singles and Bob Peterson, Zack Haske and Hunter Foss each had a single.

“It wasn’t too bad for an opener,” said Naumann. “We will get better.”
