Milaca’s boys golf team got its 2012 season underway by placing fifth at a Granite Ridge Conference meet Thursday, April 12, at Stone Creek Golf Course at Foley.
The seven-team meet, the first in a series of conference tournaments, was a close one.
St. Cloud Cathedral placed first with a score of 158 while Little Falls and Princeton tied for second place at 164. Zimmerman was fifth at 168, followed by Milaca at 170, Foley at 172 and Mora at 187.
“After Cathedral, the team scores were bunched up close,” said Milaca Coach Doug Reetz. “I think the conference meets will stay close throughout the season.”
Ninth-grader Michael Nelson led the Wolves as he shot a 39 in the nine-hole meet. Senior Brandon Kiel had a 42, ninth-grader Noel Flor had a 43 and ninth-grader Leif Larson finished at 46.
Senior Ryan Gerads shot a 47 and eighth-grader Sam Johnson finished at 59.
Tommy Hannan of Zimmerman and Sam LaBine of Cathedral each shot a 36 to tie for medalist honors.
“It was a good opener for us,” said Reetz. “Our young golfers have good potential and they need experience.”
Milaca is at Zimmerman today (Thursday) for another GRC meet at 4 p.m. The Wolves will be at Blackberry Ridge at Sartell Monday, April 23, for a pre-section meet at 9:30 a.m.
Milaca’s girls team is at New London-Spicer Friday at 10 a.m., then travels to Princeton Monday, April 23, for a conference meet at 4 p.m.
