Junior Olympic team places 2nd in division

The Milaca Junior Olympic 17 team put its game together and claimed second place in the Silver Division at the Pierz Spring Fling Sunday, March 4, at Pierz High School.

In opening-round matches, Milaca lost to Brainerd 25-8, 25-22 and Big Lake 25-14 but bounced back to defeat Foley 25-23, 25-17.

That moved the team into the Silver Division playoffs where it had a pair of close matches. Milaca dropped the first game against Becker 25-18 but rallied back to win the second and third games 25-20 and 17-15.

The victory moved Milaca to the Silver Division finals where it battled Cambridge-Isanti. Milaca dropped the opening game 25-13 but won the second game 25-21 to tie the match. Cambridge-Isanti scored a 17-15 win in the third game to win the match.

By winning several close, hard-fought games the team was able to place in its division for the first time this season.

Milaca is scheduled to compete at tournaments March 18, April 1 and April 15.

Statistics for the Pierz Spring Fling included:

-Tori Broberg: 11 kills, four blocks and one ace.

-Emily Herbert: 11 kills, 13 blocks and one ace.

-Macayla Peterson: 10 aces, three kills and nine blocks.

-Sara Warren: three aces, two kills and one block.

-Megan Kolb: three kills.

-Ali Prince: one ace, one kill.

-Olivia Wolbert: two aces, one kill, one block.

-Angela Hayek: one kill.
