SWCD may move local offices

Should Mille Lacs County be in the business of trying to rent office space to another government agency?

County commissioner Phil Peterson isn’t so sure.

The possibility exists that offices for the Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD), as well as the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), may move from a lease with a private landlord in Milaca to space at the county’s courthouse.

Don Baloun, state conservationist for the NRCS, a federal agency, spoke to county commissioners at their Feb. 21 meeting about that possibility.

After telling commissioners about his agency’s conservation work with private landowners, Baloun addressed the possibility of the two offices moving from a strip mall on the east side of Milaca.

“We want to stay joined at the hip with the SWCD,” he said.

He noted that the NRCS is a good renter that “pays well.”
