In the winter painting nativity sets and miniature houses were a favorite past time. He was a long time member of the Willmar Christian Reformed church where he served as an elder, and also was very involved in the Friendship series Bible Study with mentally challenged adults. Lawrence and Sylvia moved back to their farm in Pease in August of 2007. He was surrounded by his family when he was taken into glory on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
