Sotfball team hopes to fill shoe with shoes

This giant shoe, constructed by Bill Nelsen, will serve as a tennis shoe collection box at First National Bank in Milaca.

This year, in recognition of Earth Day 2012, the Milaca fast pitch softball team is taking the GreenShakers EcoChallenge for Education.

The Wolves have the opportunity to win $5,000 for collecting as many new or gently used tennis shoes that they can.

Milaca will be in competition with other schools around Minnesota.

The team is asking that each student bring any used pairs of shoes to collection boxes at the school or to drop them off at any one of the more than 20 locations around the Milaca area. Any type of tennis shoe can be collected, any size, boys or girls.

Even if Milaca doesn’t win the top prize, the school will receive 50 cents per pound for all the shoes collected. This will also help to keep these shoes out of landfills.

Area residents are welcome to also participate in the fund raiser and may drop tennis shoes off at the collection boxes around town.
