Texas couple seeks permit for Kennel Club

A Texas couple seeking a recreational kennel license for a site in Milo Township talked with Mille Lacs County Board members at the Aug. 16 meeting about their application.
Guy Bateman, a property owner whose property to the south abuts the property in question, had questions for Lisa and Danny Farmer of Anderson, Tex., at the meeting.
The 33-acre property is located south and slightly west of Foreston and the Farmers plan to use it during the summer months.
Danny Farmer told board members he has operated a kennel in Texas since 1982 and his occupation is training retrievers for competition at American Kennel Club field trials.
Those trials are held in the northern part of the United States during summer months and the Mille Lacs County site would be the base for training during those months, Farmer said.
“They’re quiet and well-trained,” he told commissioners about the dogs, saying they are not allowed to run loose.
Farmer told commissioners, in answer to a question, that he would follow whatever setback rules there are.
Bateman wanted assurance that there would be no field trials there, and Farmer said there wouldn’t be.
Bateman said he had three concerns about the possible location of the kennel.
The first was waste management and Farmer said he would guarantee that there would be no smell.
The second was a concern about ponds on the property being less productive for wildlife.
“The dogs will not mess with wildlife,” Farmer responded.
