Two inmates at Mille Lacs County Jail were re-arrested when they attempted to smuggle drugs back into jail while working on the sentence-to-serve (STS) crew on Wednesday, May 25.

Jail administrator Jerry Brown received information that drugs were going to be dropped off for the STS crew and were to be smuggled back into jail.

Brown informed the North Central Drug Task Force, and based on the information, set up surveillance at the Milaca water tower on 8th Street NE where the crew was to work that day.

Next to the water tower is a chain link fence and small office.

Law enforcement arrived in the morning and began searching the area with the assistance of the K-9 unit. A plastic bag was found and the dog indicated there were drugs.

The bag was left undisturbed and the officers continued surveillance. Roughly 15 minutes later the STS crew of 10 men arrived.

The officers watched four men as they came out of the small office building and appeared to be looking for something.

The criminal complaint states one man went running to the location where the bag was located. He picked up the bag and, along with another STS crew member, went into the building.

The officers went inside the building and the one man dropped the bag when they entered.

The two men, Donovan George Bassett, 21, of Mora and Robert Charles Sandberg, 22, of Clear Lake were transported back to Mille Lacs County Jail.

The bag contained two tins of tobacco snuff which had nine Oxycontin pills taped in between.

Both men were already in jail for violating their probation.

Bassett was originally charged with second degree burglary.

Sandberg was originally charged with anhydrous ammonia theft.

Both men have now been charged with fifth degree possession of a controlled substance for which they face up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

The two have also been charged with forbidden contraband articles, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and/or a $3,000 fine.

If convicted, their sentences would begin after their current sentence is complete.
