Milaca faces Pierz Baseball Milaca, seeded No. 6, will open play in the Sub-Section 18 Baseball Tournament today (Thursday) at third-seeded Pierz at 4:30 p.m. The Wolves, who finished the reguar season with a 6-10 record, lost to Pierz 8-4 in the season-opener April 8 at Pierz. ³Pierz has a good team and a good baseball tradition,² said Milaca Coach Craig Talberg. ³But, I like our chances. We played good baseball the last two weeks of the season. We just have to put everything together.² In other first-round games today (Thursday), No. 2-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral hosts No. 7-seeded Foley and No. 4-seeded Holdingford hosts No. 5-seeded Becker. Top-seeded Big Lake drew a bye in the opening round. The semifinals in the tournament are scheduled Tuesday, May 27, at Faber Field in St. cloud. The Milaca-Pierz winner will face the Cathedral-Foley winner at 5 p.m., with Big Lake meeting the Holdingford-Becker winner at 7:30. The title game is Thursday, May 29, at Faber Field at 7:30 p.m. The Sub-Section 18 winner will advance to the Section 6AA Tournament. Last week, Big Lake tipped the Wolves 4-3 Monday, May 12, at Big Lake. Milaca topped North Branch 8-1 Tuesday, May 13, at Milaca before losing at St. Michael-Albertville 10-0 in the regular-season finale. All three games were Rum River Conference outings and left the Wolves with a final RRC mark of 4-8. Big Lake 4, Milaca 3 Milaca tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fifth inning before the Hornets scored the game-deciding run in the sixth inning.
