Elsie Norine
Elsie, long-time resident of the Onamia community, died Dec. 6, 2002 at Sheridan, Wyo. at the age of 92. Born to Anton and Amanda (Froberg) Jindra in Minneapolis Aug. 8, 1910, she moved with her parents at an early age to a pioneer farm in Dailey Township in Mille Lacs County. Elsie attended District 56 rural school on the Jindra property and Onamia High School. Before marrying Laurince Norine on July 14, 1932, she worked at Bay View Hotel on Cove Bay and Hank's Cafe in Milaca. Laurince and Elsie operated a dairy farm on the Pierz road for over 30 years, retiring to Onamia in 1963. Laurince died in 1976 and Elsie moved to the Oakwood Apartments in Onamia. In 1990 she went to Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan, Wyo., to be near her daughter Marilyn. Elsie was a faithful member and worker at Bethany Lutheran Church and belonged to the Dailey Birthday Club. She loved to garden, play cards, sew and crochet. She and Laurince always shared from their garden's harvest and were known especially for their wonderful strawberries. Also preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, DeLoris Olson; brothers, James and Raymond Jindra, and one sister, Lillian Swanson. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John Leander; granddaughters, Amanda Leander Olson and Heather Leander of Billings, Mont.; grandsons, Larry and Dale Olson of Oregon; two sisters, Dorothy Rohloff and Esther Schnapp of Minnesota; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the local Gideon Organization or to Bethany Lutheran Church at Onamia.
