A turnover in administration is taking place at Milaca Public Schools as both principals have resigned.

Elementary principal Ann Kern and high school principal Jeff Drake turned in their resignations this month.

Kern will be working in the Osseo School District as the assistant director of student support services with the schoolıs district office.

Kern has been the Milaca Elementary Principal since the 1992-93 school year.

³Itıs hard, because I really like this job.² Kern said.

Sheıs looking forward to using some other skills from her background.

Kern says of her future replacement, ³I have confidence that thereıs someone else out there that will work well, too.²

Drake is moving to Battle Lake where heıs taking a high school principal position. The seventh through 12th grade student body consists of 250, while the Milaca seventh through 12th enrollment is nearly 1,000.

³It wasnıt an easy decision,² Drake said. ³An opportunity presented itself to go to a smaller school.²

Drake feels education is about relationships and he was looking for a smaller school where he could get to know the students better.

³On behalf of my family, weıve met some wonderful people here in the past two years. Itıs certainly a place that we will have fond memories of,² he added.

Staff, parents and even students will assist in choosing the new principal replacements, according to superintendent Dr. Barbra Zakrajsek.

The school is posting the positions and will begin interviewing candidates soon. Zakrajsek said they would like to have the new principals in place before the end of July.

Assistant elementary principal Nate Swenson, who was new to the district last year, also resigned earlier this year.

The school has not found a replacement for him yet.

The school has found a replacement for the high school band director who resigned earlier this year after one year of service.

Andrew Nelson of Red Wing will be the new band director.
