Hazel Schmatz

Funeral services for Hazel E. Schmatz, 89, of Princeton, were held Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Princeton with the Rev. Stephen Cook officiating.

Pallbearers included Sonja Schmatz Lehigh, Todd Schmatz, Richard Gustafson, Marlys Sanford, Patricia Sanford and Gary Aufderhar.

Hazel died Friday, July 18, 2003 at the Elim Home in Princeton.

She was born Dec. 28, 1913 in Princeton Township to Philip and Selma (Olson) Bier. Hazel grew up in Princeton Township and graduated from Princeton High School in 1932. She continued her education at St. Cloud State, graduating in 1963 with a B.S. in elementary education. She taught school in the Princeton/Milaca area for 46 years, retiring in 1979. Hazel married Theodore Schmatz Sept. 1, 1939 in Lansing, Iowa. The couple operated her familyıs farm in Princeton Township from 1939 on. She lived on the farm her entire life. Hazel was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Princeton.

Survivors include her son, Virgil and Barb of Princeton; grandchildren, Sonja Schmatz Lehigh of Eagan and Todd A. Schmatz of Princeton; great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives and friends.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted; and her sister, Hilda.
