Woman arrested for holding knife to baby By DAWN SLADE On the morning of Thursday, Feb. 6, Mille Lacs County Sheriffís Deputies were called to 10297 Highway 27 to investigate an out of control woman with a knife. En route, the officers were informed the woman, Lauren Anne Smith, 18, left the home. Officers found Smith walking along the highway and asked her to return with them to the residence. Deputies then spoke with Steven Wassel and Tyson Nickaboine. Wassel told authorities that earlier in the morning he saw Smith and Nickaboine arguing and saw her throwing things around, causing damage to the home. He reported that Smith also took a large knife and held it to the throat of a six-month-old baby, which was later identified as Smith and Nickaboineís baby. Wassel also reported that Smith said, "Iím going to kill myself and this baby." Smith has been charged with assault in the second degree (dangerous weapon), which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and/or a $14,000 fine. She has also been charged with making terroristic threats which carries a five year maximum prison sentence and/or a $10,000 fine. The final charge against Smith is domestic assault, which carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Smith is currently in the Mille Lacs County Jail. Conditional bail has been set at $20,000. Smith is not allowed to have contact with her baby or the other residents in the home.
