Wolves lose to RRC leaders Milacaís girls basketball team lost to two of the Rum River Conferenceís top teams last week as the Wolves fell at home to North Branch 52-36 Tuesday, Feb. 4 before losing at St. Michael-Albertville 57-42 Thursday, Feb. 6. North Branch and Chisago Lakes are tied for first place in the RRC with 11-1 records while St. Michael-Albertville is in third place with a 10-2 conference mark. Both North Branch and Chisago Lakes are ranked in the top 10 in the Associated Press Class AAA girls state poll. "We played pretty well, considering the caliber of teams we were facing," said Milaca Coach Jamie Taylor. "We stayed with North Branch in the first half and played them pretty evenly in the fourth quarter. The third quarter was the big difference. "We got off to a slow start against St. Michael-Albertville but we had some good spurts during the game. Both teams played well-theyíre just a little better team." Milaca, which dropped to a 1-11 RRC record and a 2-16 overall record, has three regular-season games remaining, starting tonight (Thursday) at Chisago Lakes at 7:30. The Wolves travel to Pine City Tuesday (Feb. 18) before closing the regular season at home against Princeton Friday, Feb. 21. Both games are at 7:30. North Branch 52, Milaca 36 Milaca trailed 15-6 after the opening quarter but cut the margin to 27-22 at halftime with a 16-12 scoring edge in the second quarter. However, the defending RRC champion Vikings outscored the Wolves 18-5 in the third quarter to take a 45-27 lead. Senior guard Katie Helmin's seven points led Milaca while eighth grade forward Maggie Doty and senior guard Jessie Stimmler each scored six points. Junior center Lyz Tesch had 10 rebounds and five points. Milaca shot 30.2 percent (16-for-53) from the field and made just one of 13 attempts from the foul line. Traci Reimannís 19 points led North Branch. The Vikings shot 38.6 percent (17-44) from the field while making 15 of 23 free throws. SM-Albertville 57, Milaca 42 The Knights led 18-10 after the first quarter and 28-17 at halftime. A 17-8 edge in the third quarter sent SM-A into the final quarter with a 45-25 lead. Tesch led Milaca with 12 points and seven rebounds while Maggie Doty had nine points and eight rebounds. Helmin added nine points. Milaca shot 36.2 percent (17-47) from the field while making seven of 16 free throws.
