Hattie Vedders

Funeral services for Hattie (Verbrugge) Vedders, 94, were held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Christian Reformed Church in Pease with the Rev. Gerald Vander Hoek and the Rev. Tom Sahlstrom officiating. Burial was in the Pease Cemetery. Pallbearers were family members.

Arrangements were by the Peterson-Johnson Funeral Home in Milaca.

Hattie died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002.

She was born May 30, 1908, to Jacobus and Maria Verbrugge in Chandler, Minn. She was one of 11 children. At the age of 12 she began to do housework and farm chores for many area residents. She also worked in Grand Rapids, Mich., for a short time. She farmed with her brother Cornelius for several years. In 1939 she married John F. Vedders of Pease. The couple had one son, James. John and Hattie farmed in the Pease area until 1966 when they moved to Pease.
Hattie was a member of the Pease Christian Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid Society. She was also a member of the Motherís Club of the Community Christian School.

Hattie loved writing letters, gardening, cooking and baking. Her grandchildren, Judith and Joel, were her pride and joy. Hattie remained in her home until July of 1995 when she became a resident of the Milaca Elim Home.

She is survived by one son, James and wife Joanne of Milaca; two grandchildren, Judith and husband Dan VanSolkema of Byron Center, Mich., and Joel Vedders and wife Barbara of Grand Rapids, Mich.; five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kathryn and Sara Van Solkema, Abby and Jack Vedders; and one sister, Nellie Christians of Edgerton, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1986, an infant daughter, her parents, five brothers and four sisters.
