10 years ago Nov. 18, 1992 ïMichelle "Shelley" Eisenzimmer is the new owner of Shear Beauty in Milaca. The business is located in the Mid-Town Plaza in Milaca. Larry and Julie Karels have opened Milaca Depot Floral after purchasing the former railroad depot building from the city. ïMilaca High School students favored Independent Party presidential candidate Ross Perot in an election at the school conducted by social studies teacher Mark Ziebarth. Perot received 177 votes while Democrat Bill Clinton, who won the general election received 134 and Republican George Bush garnered 77 votes. ïJean Anderson is the new home economics extension director for Mille Lacs County while Ralph VanDixhorn is the new agricultural agent for the county. They will split duties between Mille Lacs and Isanti counties. ïJohn Herubin of Timmer Implement at Pease has received a quality service award from the Minnesota Council for Quality. Herubin has worked at Timmer Implement for 23 years. "John can tell more just by listening to the machinery than anyone else can by taking it apart," said Les Ruis of Timmer Implement. 20 years ago Nov. 17, 1982 ïThe Rev. Philip Hansen, a native of Milaca, has been cited by Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, for his distinguished service to humanity as a pastor, a counselor to alcoholics and as a leader in the development of programs related to chemical dependency. He is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Harold Hansen of Milaca. ïAbout 150 people attended the showing of a film at Milaca High School about traditional farming methods in Sweden. Stefan Gustavsson, a journalist in Tingsryd, Sweden and his wife Ann brought the film with them when they recently visited Milaca. Milaca ag instructor Bob Larson drew comparison between the scenes in the film and farming in Hayland Township. 30 years ago Nov. 16, 1972 ïWes Werner, a former member of the Milaca Fire Department who now resides in Shakopee, has been appointed Minnesota State Fire Marshall. He operated Werner Hardware in Milaca. ïTurkeys are 37 cents a pound at Olsonís SuperValu. ïVerona Berg has been appointed Mille Lacs County Register of Deeds by the county board. Berg takes over for Clair Ortquist, who resigned Oct. 31. ïFrederick Samuelson of Foreston died Nov. 13 at the age of 89. He was born in Westergotland, Sweden and came to the U.S. at a young age with his parents. The family moved from Chicago, Ill., to the Foreston area in 1902. 40 years ago Nov. 15,1962 ïThe village council at its last meeting, after much discussion, voted to close the present city dump and open a new dump in a different location effective Nov. 24. The new dump is located just west of Milaca, near the new sewage lagoon. ïMille Lacs Countyís ballot boxes from the recent election are now under the watchful eyes of two guards, one Republican and one Democrat. The boxes are stored in the vault at the office of county auditor Albert Sundberg at the courthouse in Milaca. The two men are stationed in Sundbergís office so they can maintain visual guard over the ballots. Jens Ege of Greenbush (DFL) and H.H. Sanborn of Princeton (Republican) go on duty every day at 8 a.m. and watch the ballots until 5 p.m., when the vault is locked for the night. The procedure will go on until some decision is reached as to whether there will be a statewide recount for the office of governor and possibly for the representative of the Sixth District. Republican Elmer L. Andersen, the incumbent, held a slim lead over Democrat Karl Rolvaag in the Nov. 6 election. 60 years ago Nov. 12, 1942 ïRegistration for gasoline rationing has been set for Nov. 12-13 in Mille Lacs County and car owners should register at the schoolhouse nearest their home or the same place they registered for the sugar rationing plan. In Milaca, registration will be handled by high school superintendent N.T. Tosseland and his staff of teachers. Rural school teachers will handle registration at all the country schools. To be eligible for a gasoline ration book, applicants must certify that they possess only five tires. ïThere will be a meeting for county air raid wardens Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. at Milaca High School. Wardens will receive information about their duties. ïWomen in the county are being counted on to support the war effort by collecting tin cans, waste fats and used silk and nylon hosiery. Cans should be cleaned, with tops and bottoms cut and inserted inside the can, then taken to area grocers. Waste fats should be taken to the local meat dealer while used silk and nylon should be delivered to dry goods dealers who will place the material in 100-pound bags for shipping to collection depots.
