Nov. 5, 1997 ïUnbeaten Becker (11-0) topped Milaca 35-12 in the championship game of the Section 5AAA Football Playoff last Friday night at Becker. Milacaís touchdowns came on a 30-yard pass from junior quarterback Zach Zimmer to sophomore end Jake Johnson and a 41-yard pass from Zimmer to junior end Joe Hasz. Zimmer completed 13 of 27 passes for 171 yards with Hasz making six receptions for 85 yards and junior back Mark Kotsmith notching four receptions for 59 yards. Milaca, which finished the season with a 5-6 record under first-year coach Mike Lundeen, reached the playoff finals by stopping Annandale 32-14 and Mora 38-14. ïMilaca junior Eric Dahlstrom placed 33rd at the Class A State Cross Country Meet Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield. He had a time of 17:37.5. ********** Nov. 4, 1992 ïMilaca, with 212 points, placed third at the five team Rum River Conference Swimming and Diving Meet Saturday at Milaca. Cambridge won the title with 402 points while Sauk Rapids was second with 267. Senior Rachael Hemstad led Milaca as she won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.29 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:48.43. Junior Allison Anfinson placed second in the 50 free style with a time of 26.57 seconds. ********** Nov. 10, 1982 ïRochester Lourdes tipped Milaca 19-14 in the first round of the Class A State High School Football Playoff Tuesday night at Claffy Field. One-yard touchdown runs by quarterback Kris Shefveland and fullback Joe Meixell and a two-point conversion run by Meixell put the Indians ahead 14-13 at halftime. Lourdes scored the winning touchdown with 4:20 left in the game. Halfback Chad Swenson led Milaca with 152 rushing yards on 14 carries. Coach Duane Jerzakís team finished with an 8-2 record. ********** Nov. 9, 1972 ïMilaca finished with a 4-3 Rum River Conference football record after losing at Cambridge 46-0 in the season finale Friday. Cambridge and Sauk Rapids tied for the RRC title. Runningback Todd Treichel led Cambridge against Milaca. ********** Nov. 8, 1962 ïIn his list of "bests" for the 1962 football season, Times sports columnist Jere Cravens issued the following awards: -Best Offensive Fullback: Bill Cornelius, Elk River. -Best Offensive Right Halfback, Best Placement Kicker and Best Defensive Back: Brent Swanson, Milaca. -Best Left Offensive Halfback: Steve Lindell, Princeton. -Best Quarterback: Dean Hansen, Princeton. -Most Dangerous Runner: Lee Phillips, Milaca. -Best Offensive Tackle:Jeff Boland, Milaca. -Best Punter: Ron Ferguson, Milaca. -Best Team Milaca Faced: Rum River Conference champion Princeton. ********** --Sports Flashbacks is compiled by Gary Larson.
