flags on city streets

The American Legion is the organization that puts up the flags for national holidays and to commemorate various war-related dates. It is not the VFW, as was reported in last weekís issue of the Times. Eighty flags are raised throughout Milaca. The following is a list of when flags should be raised according to the Legion. Unless stated otherwise, the flags are to be up from sunrise to sunset. January New Years Day Jan. 20 - Martin Luther King Day February Feb. 12 - Lincolnís Birthday Feb. 17 - Presidents Day April Easter May Motherís Day - 2nd Sunday May 15 - Peace Officerís Day - 1/2 staff May 17 - Armed Forces Day Memorial Day - 1/2 staff until noon - last Monday June June 14 - Flag Day (The United States Army was founded in 1775) July July 4 - Independence Day September Labor Day - 1st Monday Sept. 11 - Patriot Day - 1/2 staff Sept. 17 - Constitution Day POW/MIA Day - 3rd Friday October Columbus Day - 2nd Monday Oct. 27 - Navy Day November Nov. 10 - U.S. Marine Corp established Nov. 11 - Veterans Day Thanksgiving - fourth Thursday December Dec. 7 - Pearl Harbor Day - 1/2 staff Dec. 25 - Christmas Day
