Breeding birds will be the focus of a bird hike scheduled for Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, June 1 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Participants will meet at the Old School House and car pool to nearby woodland trails and the Wildlife Drive to look for birds.

Among the birds usually found in the woodlands are Scarlet Tanager, Indigo Bunting, Red-eyed Vireo, Least Flycatcher, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Warblers may include Chestnut-sided, Golden-winged, American Redstart, and Ovenbird.

Mosquitos may be pesky; bring repellent as well as your binoculars and a field guide. Hike leader will be Barb Kull, an experienced birder familiar with the Refuge. This program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested by calling Nancy Haugen, Refuge Public Use Specialist at (763) 389-3323 ext. 213 or toll free at 877/721-4295. TTY users may access the Refuge through the Federal Information Relay Service at 1-800-877-8339. The Old School House is located on Sherburne County Road 9, 5.5 miles west of Highway 169. Due to construction on Hwy. 169 at the Co. Rd. 9 intersection, follow detour signs or call for directions.
